Dr Martin Bunnage BSc(Hons) M.Psych(Neuro) PhD C.Psychol
Consultant Neuropsychologist



Dr Bunnage is a Consultant Neuropsychologist
and Chartered Psychologist (C.Psychol). He specialises in adult neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation. After completing his first degree (Bachelor of Science) in Psychology at the University of Bristol he went to Melbourne University, Australia, to train in Clinical Neuropsychology. Here he completed two years full-time specialist University and Hospital training in Clinical Neuropsychology (Master of Psychology degree). He has been examined in neuroanatomy, neuropathology, clinical neuropsychology, clinical psychology and psychometric test theory. He holds a PhD in clinical neuropsychology from the University of Bristol.

Dr Bunnage has been practicing Clinical Neuropsychology at Frenchay Hospital since January 2002, and has worked in a broad variety of settings including, neurosurgery, neurology, neuropsychiatry and brain injury rehabilitation. He became Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist in 2007.  Presently within his NHS role he is the Clinical Lead for Avon's community brain injury rehabilitation service. He also holds the academic position of Honorary Senior Lecturer within the Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Bristol and was co-founder of the MSc degree in Neuropsychology offered there. He currently divides his time between his NHS practice, research and teaching and his private practice.  He is interested in all aspects of adult clinical neuropsychology, especially the neuropsychological assessment and treatment of acquired brain injury (including traumatic brain injury).

Dr Bunnage is a Chartered Psychologist (C.Psychol) and Full Practictioner Member of the Division of Neuropsychology of the British Psychological Society. He is a member of the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies. He also regularly teaches Clinical Neuropsychology on regional clinical psychology training courses and the MRCPsych training program for psychiatrists.
 

Medico-Legal Practice

Dr Bunnage joined NPsych as an associate partner in 2006 to further develop his medico-legal practice. Dr Bunnage accepts claimant, defendant and joint instructions. He also accepts instructions in clinical negligence. He has received specific training in writing expert witness reports and working as an expert witness. He works on a turn around time of 4 weeks from the date of assessment for the production of his report. If reports are required more urgently then this may be accommodated but can only be guaranteed by prior arrangement. Dr Bunnage accepts 30-40 new instructions per annum.

Dr Bunnage works under the model of scientist practitioner and attempts to employ both scientific and clinical methods in his approach to assessment and reporting. He uses tests that have good psychometric properties. He undertakes assessments of sufficient depth and breadth to maximise the reliability and validity of his findings. Dr Bunnage's reports are detailed and thorough and reflect his commitment to excellence in terms of the scientifically reliable practice of clinical neuropsychology.

 

Treatment, Consultation and Clinical Leadership

In addition to his work as an expert witness Dr Bunnage provides clinical leadership and consultation to case managers and support worker teams working with brain injured clients. He is happy to provide training in working with brain injured people to support workers and other staff organised by case managers to help with the rehabilitation and care of brain-injured persons. He also provides neuropsychological rehabilitation and CBT-based treatments via one-to-one sessions to individuals that have experienced brain injuries.

Dr Bunnage does accept self-referrals for treatment but rather insists on a referral from medical practitioner, case manager or solicitor.
