Dr Nigel H Walton BA(Hons) MA(Clin.Neuro)
PhD C.Psychol AFBPsS
I am a Consultant Neuropsychologist and Chartered Psychologist (CPsychol). I
have experience in the neuropsychology of epilepsy, head injury,
alcohol-related disorder and general neurological disorders. I am an
Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (AFBPsS) and a Full
Practitioner Member of the BPS Division of Neuropsychology (DoN). I was
previously Secretary of the National Executive of the Australian
Psychological Society College of Clinical Neuropsychology. I am a member of
the International Neuropsychological Society, The British Neuropsychological
Society, The British Neuropsychiatric Association and an Affiliate Member of
the American Psychological Association. I have a four-year Bachelors degree
with Honours in Psychology, a Masters degree with Honours in Clinical
Neuropsychology (MA (Hons) Clin Neuro) which represents 2 years full-time
specialist training in Clinical Neuropsychology. I have a PhD in
Neuropsychology, which was concerned with the measurement of memory in
patients undergoing neurosurgery for epilepsy. My training was under Dr
Kevin Walsh who is an internationally recognised leader in the field of
clinical neuropsychology. My training has included written and oral
examinations in neuroanatomy, neurology, neuropathology and psychometric
test theory. I worked as a Clinical
Neuropsychologist at the Westmead Hospital, Sydney, Australia for three
years before becoming Head of the Neuropsychology Unit there, a post I held
for a further two years until my return to the UK. Prior to my return to the
UK I was also a Consultant Neuropsychologist to the Commonwealth
Rehabilitation Service and to Long Bay Jail. Until 2001 I was Head of the
Department of Clinical Neuropsychology within the North Bristol NHS Trust
and also the Manager of the Epilepsy Surgery Programme. Currently I retain a
post as Visiting Consultant Neuropsychologist within the North Bristol NHS
Trust but have reduced my responsibilities there so as to devote most of my
time to my private and medico-legal practice which has become increasingly
busy in recent years. In addition to my clinical work,
I have an academic post in the form of a visiting senior lecturer’s post in
the Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Bristol where
I lecture undergraduate and post-graduate students in neuropsychology. I am
convenor of a course in Clinical Neuropsychology. I am called upon to
provide supervision for qualified Clinical Psychologists in the specialty of
Neuropsychology. I have been invited to speak on
the topic of neuropsychology, both nationally and internationally, including
providing accredited lectures for the Bristol Law Society's continuing
education programme. I have published book chapters and articles on
neuropsychology as it relates to epilepsy, head injury, alcohol-related
disorders and neurological disease. MEDICO-LEGAL PRACTICE I accept in the order of 170
instructions annually. Currently these comprise 13% joint instructions, 45%
Claimant and 42% Defendant. I accept instructions in clinical negligence
cases and have experience in criminal cases. My waiting list is in the
region of 12 weeks and I currently work on a turn around time of 6 weeks
from the date of assessment for the production of my report. If reports are
required more urgently then this may be accommodated but can only be
guaranteed by prior arrangement. I work under the model of
scientist practitioner and attempt to employ both scientific and clinical
methods in my approach to assessment and reporting. I employ only those
tests that have good psychometric properties and carry out sufficient
assessment to maximise the reliability and validity of my findings. My
reports are detailed and thorough and reflect my commitment to excellence in
terms of both psychometric testing issues and qualitative approaches to test
interpretation. My reports have been highly regarded by both Claimant and
Defendant solicitors and I have established a reputation as an impartial
expert such that at a past meeting of Claimant and Defendant solicitors, my
name was one of only two in the UK who were regarded as instantly acceptable
to both parties. I currently have rooms in Bristol
and London. I am happy to accept referrals from anywhere in the UK and am
prepared to travel throughout the UK to assess Claimants at home when
necessary. I am experienced at giving evidence in Court and my evidence has
been commended by solicitors, barristers, and judges. |
