Dr McCarter obtained her BA(Hons) in Psychology at the University of Newcastle, Australia and her MA (Hons. Clin. Neuro) in Clinical Neuropsychology at the University of Melbourne, Australia. She then worked at the Royal Rehabilitation Hospital in Ryde, Sydney for two years, a residential neurorehabilitation unit for adult individuals with neurological and brain injuries, before taking a position at Westmead Hospital, Sydney in paediatrics. She provided services to inpatients, outpatients and to the New South Wales wide outreach team for children with brain injuries, neurological and neurodevelopmental conditions. Additionally, she worked for the multidisciplinary complex specific learning difficulties assessment team. She was Head of Neuropsychology in her final year of employment at Westmead Hospital. Dr McCarter also provided sessional services to the Commonwealth Rehabilitation Service at three locations in Sydney, a service dedicated to return to work for adults with acquired brain injury, as well as to the Brain Injury Programme of NSW at Mosman in Sydney and at rural facilities in Bathurst and Dubbo New South Wales. In 1994, Dr McCarter moved to the UK, taking up a position at Highbank Healthcare in Bury, Lancashire, initially in the adult residential service before moving to the paediatric and adolescent unit, Lynne House. In 1996, she commenced work at Frenchay Hospital, Bristol in a split role servicing paediatric neurosciences, adult neurosurgery and neuropsychiatry. She was co-ordinator of the Paediatric Epilepsy Surgery Programme and, from 2001-2005, Head of Neuropsychology. Following completion of her PhD in Experimental Psychology at Bristol University in 2006, she has worked in independent practice providing neuropsychological services to private patients, occupational health providers and medico-legal services. Dr McCarter has provided visiting lecturer services in Australia and the UK and she continues to engage in regular peer review with senior members of the neuropsychological community. Dr McCarter is a Chartered Psychologist, is a Registered Practitioner and Clinical Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council, an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, and is registered on the British Psychological Society's Division of Neuropsychology Specialist Registrar of Clinical Neuropsychologists and the Faculty of Paediatric Neuropsychology.
